The City of Albuquerque announced early January the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the City a permit to reduce pollutants from Albuquerque Metro area streets into the Rio Grande. The new permit has potential consequences for the area’s developers and builders. It adds additional performance requirements, specifically that they design storm water retention areas to replenish the groundwater supply.
“Typically, this means builders or developers will add a retention pond to their property, which could be a loss of valuable space and potentially profit,” explained Kelley Fetter, CEO of E2RC, a storm water engineering consulting firm. “We can take the required retention areas and work with the plans to build parking lots, or bike trails, or other amenities that meet the new EPA requirement, and still fulfill the developers’ goals.”
The new EPA permit takes effect January 1. To help builders and developers that may not be in compliance, Fetter will offer a free one-hour consultation to ascertain if there are any compliance issues. Clients who utilize E2RC’s turn-key services are given a Fine Shield – meaning if there is ever an EPA compliance issue, E2RC will pay all fines.
